Our aim is to provide insight into the reliability of online information.

Page Facts is a design and research project that aims to provide insight into the reliability of online information.

A single search on Google can lead to millions of results. But which are the most reliable sources? Page Facts provides extra essential information on these sources. Users can now see the reliability of a source at a glance.

Through cooperation with journalists we have honed our software to meet stringent requirements. We began by examining their information verification methods. We then brainstormed with our software developers on automating those methods. When Page Facts is launched users will be enabled to rapidly check the reliability of anything they read.

research

We began our research by interviewing journalists from NRC.nl, NRCQ, de Volkskrant, Nu.nl, VPRO Bureau Buitenland, RTL Nieuws and Nu.nl about their work. During these interviews we became aware that journalists often spend up to half a working day verifying information. In order to check this information they review specific indicators, giving them clues as to its plausibility. They check the dates and latest updates on an article, do background checks of authors and platforms, trying to find the original source. We have learnt from this method. We have designed criteria for articles that our software verifies.

When Page Facts offers this extra information with the article, journalists will have immediate, relevant insight even before they start to read.

We are currently immersed in more research. We are interviewing journalists, acquiring more understanding about their verification methods and problems. Soon we will build our second prototype and launch Page Facts as an online application.

FEATURES of our first proposal

After series of interviews with journalist, we figure out some basic needs of them. Our aim at the primary stage is shorten the process to obtain the information during their research.

The software is current under development, and here are the features we are going provide.

TEAM

Page Facts is comprised of an interdisciplinary and international team - computer scientist, journalist, information designer and social designer - focusing on the future of information consumption. We believe in researching, prototyping and testing - with the power of different professions form various backgrounds.
